The Brief
Our brief was to design and deliver the theming for a fully immersive Christmas Grotto experience within the iconic Queen’s House in Greenwich, positioning our work as premium Christmas Grotto services suitable for high-profile visitor attractions.
The challenge was to create a visually enchanting, narrative-led journey that would captivate families while respecting the sensitivities of a Grade I listed building. The experience needed to feel theatrical and transportive, guiding guests through a series of magical environments while maintaining the integrity and elegance of the historic interiors. We were tasked with developing the theming, lighting design, and full costume provision, ensuring every detail contributed to a cohesive storytelling experience rooted in festive tradition.
Importantly, all scenic and technical elements had to be fully compliant with conservation requirements, with no impact on the building’s fabric. The result needed to balance spectacle with sensitivity, delivering a memorable, high-quality Christmas attraction that elevated the visitor experience while aligning with the standards expected of a heritage site.
What We Did
We designed a carefully curated journey that unfolded across the grand rooms, using sympathetic set design, prop styling, and bespoke lighting to enhance rather than compete with the architecture. All installations were developed in line with conservation regulations, ensuring no fixings or finishes compromised the historic interiors. The experience began with a charming meet & greet by two classic Toy Soldiers taking guests through to Clara’s 19th Century living room, where a dramatic Christmas bauble cascade appeared to erupt from the fireplace, setting a magical tone as guests encountered Clara and the Nutcracker. From there, visitors were guided through a sequence of immersive environments including the Land of Sweets and the Land of Ice and Snow, each brought to life through layered scenic elements, atmospheric soundscapes, and precisely programmed lighting.
The journey concluded in a grand Christmas Grotto space, where children experienced a cosy and theatrical storytelling moment with Santa, completing a seamless and memorable festive narrative.
What We Did
Our costume design and tailoring service played a pivotal role in elevating the overall experience, reinforcing the premium quality of our Christmas Grotto services. We designed and produced bespoke costumes for Clara, The Nutcracker, Meet & Greet Tin Soldiers, The Elf, and Santa, ensuring each character visually aligned with the refined aesthetic of the setting. Every costume was meticulously crafted using high-quality fabrics and finishes, reflecting the grandeur and period influence of the theme. Performers attended professional fittings, allowing each piece to be tailored precisely for comfort, movement, and visual impact. This made-to-measure approach ensured consistency across all character interactions, enhancing the immersive storytelling and maintaining a polished, theatrical standard throughout the visitor journey.
