National Gallery Christmas Show
Boo Productions were thrilled to be involved in an astounding Cultural Heritage First. In collaboration with the iconic National Gallery, Trafalgar Square, devised a festive stage performance inspired by a much-loved winter painting; Hendrick Avercamp’s ‘Winter Scene With Skaters Near A Castle’. In this live performance children’s stage show, we transported our audience from the shores of the icy lake in Avercamp’s painting into the depths of an enchanted winter forest.
The show was well received and equally well reviewed, which was a huge boost for our first foray from live event production to theatre production. There were many reviews but the Broadway World ‘4 star’ review summed things up nicely: “Ever wanted to step inside the world of one of the National Gallery’s paintings? Immersive theatre company Boo Productions may have the answer. In what is surprisingly the National Gallery’s first-time hosting theatre, a Picture-Perfect Christmas takes as its inspiration the Dutch painter Hendrick Avercamp’s idyllic oil snowscapes. Writer-director Francesca Renèe Reid and composer Edward Court pluck their protagonists from the foreground of Avercamp’s wintry village scenes, and use them to create an original, pantomime-influenced Christmas fairytale.”
