The Brief
The client approached us because they were looking to appoint a production company to create a fully immersive event for their internal Christmas Party, that felt a little different to the norm… which was right up our street.
They had already booked a fabulous venue – One Embankment, hidden under a bridge on the river Thames, opposite the South Bank. The client wanted to totally transform the venue, as the interior was a little rough round the edges, creating a magical feel to the space that would entrance their guests.
The client has offices dotted across the globe, in the USA, Australia and Europe, and employees would be travelling from these locations to attend the party. There was pressure to impress, as the counterpart offices would also be designing and organising their own Christmas Parties, each with an individual theme and concept – then the employees had the option to choose which party to wished to attend. So naturally our client wanted ours to be the best!
What We Did
We designed our event around the concept of ‘The Grand Victorian Ball’. This was a conceptual theme with a storyline featuring a group of magicians meeting in a secret manor house location, leading up to a transformative moment at midnight.
We built a set of impressive theatre flats as the manor house walls, painted and decorated in flocked wallpaper with gold framed portraits of our cast. Large palms and velvet furniture were positioned around the manor house set, to create seating clusters for the guests.
We created an incredible VIP Whiskey Bar, positioned in a linking side space through a curved vaulted entrance, for guests to enjoy, manned by a pair of Illusionist twins.
A trio of professional magicians emerged from the Whiskey Bar as the evening progressed, entertaining the guests with exciting card and magic tricks.
We also provided a full cast of walkabout performers in stunning Victorian costumes. These performers were the troupe of Illusionists, who interacted with the guests and entertained with short stories, based around the concept and theme. They were firm favourites with the guests, particularly as they also gave out magical playing cards, which allowed them to request special VIP cocktails at the bars.
On stage we began the evening with a beautiful acoustic Violin duo, followed by an enigmatic Saxophonist. A DJ was based on a bespoke Victorian flocked booth, as the Saxophonist moved into the crowd, swapping his instrument for a neon LED saxophone, that shone across the crowd and wowed guests.
As a final touch all of the bar and wait staff were given costume accessories to wear, in the form of top hats and waistcoats, which transformed as the event progressed through the evening. The event finally hit midnight in a blast of music, lighting and energy – to massive applause and ‘one more song’ chanted on repeat!
